Enhancing DEI Understanding Through Chatbot Polling: Insights from Gen Z

Abstract

DICCE’s mission is to help Gen Z appreciate diversity, foster inclusion, and empower others to create equitable change.

CommonAlly was tasked with pioneering an approach to gain Gen Z's perspective on DEI topics. We leveraged our signature methodology and chatbot skip-logic technology to gather more than 8,200 data points from 500+ individuals.

The study examines and provides insight into:

  • GenZ engagement levels and learning preferences
  • DEI topic interest
  • Valuable data for educators, policymakers, and DEI advocates.

Introduction

To deepen the comprehension of DEI among younger generations, a targeted survey was conducted to explore Generation Z's engagement with and attitudes toward various DEI subjects.

This age group, predominantly between 18 and 25, represents a critical segment of the population as they transition into the workforce and societal leadership roles. Understanding their perspective on DEI is essential for crafting effective educational content and policies.

High Engagement

The survey achieved a 57% completion rate, with a significant interest in DEI topics. More than 70% expressed interest in all queried subjects, especially the history of race post-1900 (86%).

In-Person Learning Preferences

A notable preference for in-person learning (56.7%) over virtual formats (11.7%), with a majority favoring learning from experts (73%).

Video Content Vital to Engagement

The educational video was well-received (83% rated it positively), though suggestions for improvement included deeper content and more visual aids.

Implications

This case study suggests several strategies for improving DEI education.

  • Content Depth: incorporating more detailed analyses and diverse perspectives into DEI content to satisfy the desire for comprehensive understanding.
  • Engagement Strategies: utilizing visual aids and interactive elements to maintain attention and enhance the learning experience.
  • Format Diversity: blending in-person and digital learning environments to cater to diverse preferences, potentially increasing the effectiveness of DEI education.

Limitations

This survey is limited by the small sample size and mostly white participants. While it is representative of a specific segment of Gen Z (white and educated), it is not representative of the whole Gen Z population in the United States.

Conclusion

Chatbot engagement offers a pathway to collect critical insights into Gen Z's engagement with and attitudes towards current trends, policies, and movements.

By understanding Gen Z preferences and feedback, educators and DEI advocates can tailor their approaches to meet the needs of this pivotal demographic. As Gen Z continues to shape the future societal landscape, their inclusive and informed perspectives on DEI will be instrumental in driving progress towards more equitable and inclusive communities.
